Dead Poets Society: My Review & Thoughts
“One of the most influential films I have ever watched” — the author of this article, February 2026
[please ignore the following blurb if you would just like to see my official review — below]
When I decided to watch Weir’s Dead Poets Society (1989), I was in a bad mood. It was only a few days into winter break, which should have been a time of me faithfully anticipating snow (it still hasn’t snowed — it’s February now), but instead had turned into a dismal few days where I was stuck at home, depressed for several personal reasons (friends all left for vacation, a parent away, a lack of general Christmas spirit, etc.).
I think these circumstances made this movie very special to me. I had rarely gone outside despite the fact that Christmas was creeping close, and I hadn’t watched a movie in months. In fact, the last time I had watched a movie start to finish was The Notebook, which unfortunately I did not like. So I was sitting, teary-eyed, on my bed, a bit sad, a bit empty, as I hopped on Disney+ to watch DPS.
I was influenced to watch DPS because of, of course, a TikTok. Here are my thoughts on the 2-hour 8-minute film:
